Two weeks ago, as I was sweating out my final 2 lbs in the hot Phoenix sun (topping 100+ degrees), I asked myself, "Why do I still compete?" That pervasive thought ran thicker than the water-depraved blood in my veins. I always called those self-defeating thoughts, "mental demons," and could usually cast them from my … Continue reading Why I Still Compete
For the vast majority of my jiu jitsu career, I really had it all wrong. I spent all my time trying to be the best on the mats. I didn't care about getting "better" as much as I did that I was simply better then everyone else around me. I used the people in class, … Continue reading My Jiu Jitsu Manifesto
What up, Undisputed - Tucson?! I'm absolutely stoked to be there in a little over 2 weeks! I'm taking some time to rest up and recover from foot surgery. We have some big events coming up for Team Shawn … Continue reading Back at it!
Falling off the training "wagon" happens to everyone at least once over the course of their training career. The realty about what we do is that it's not always easy on your body. Throughout my BJJ career I've sustained many injuries; some more serious than others. I've torn my ACL, MCL and LCL; torn cartilage … Continue reading I Wanna Win!
My trip to Australia was absolutely amazing. I'm quite positive that getting to see your little sister get married is one of the best feelings in the world. Standing beside her as her "Man of Honor" was by far the coolest experience I've ever encountered...next to proposing to my future wife. Even though the trip … Continue reading Australia
I just found an old match I had against Tristan Yunker at an EGO tournament in Indianapolis back in 2008! This was in the finals of the purple belt division. Tristan was sporting a white belt because he forgot his! LOL. Great match against a great competitor though.
